Shooting at Howe Park Sends Multiple Gunshot Victims in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade Neighborhood

Law enforcement in Sacramento are working a gun violence incident that erupted late Saturday at Howe Park in Sacramento just as officers were clearing a large unauthorized gathering of a crowd of several hundred.

Background

Deputies were first called to the park at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Not long after, another report was received concerning a possible physical fight happening near the park.

Aerial units searched from above but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Regardless, it became clear that an enormous crowd had come together at the location without any permit or approval.

The Shooting Itself

Law enforcement personnel worked to disperse the crowd by encircling the gathering and announcing over their public address systems telling attendees to disperse at once. Around 15 minutes were allotted for attendees to disperse.

As the crowd was being cleared that between 20 and 25 rounds rang out. Gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Law enforcement quickly moved to looking for those injured.

The Shooting Victims

Altogether, four gunshot victims were discovered with shooting injuries. The four individuals — including a female and three males all believed to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were transported to area medical facilities. Emergency physicians reported that two victims were in serious condition, one had moderate injuries, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, all four victims survived and were stable.

The Investigation

The center of the incident was determined to have happened adjacent to Cottage Way next to the Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. CSI personnel located additional spent rounds on the Cottage Way roadway. Ballistic damage were identified in the wrought iron fence adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. These discoveries pointed to that one of the gunmen had been sending rounds south from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot building and parking lot. The nearby Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Crime scene technicians and detectives continued working throughout the night.

Suspect Information

Reports confirmed via scanner audio confirmed that a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in nearby Solano County. Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Deputies were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for questioning. Surveillance footage revealed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
